Osibisa – Music For Gong Gong - 1971

Osibisa, criss-cross rhythms that explode with happiness.

If you listen to their first track on their first album from 1971, these will be the first words you hear and they explain the group perfectly. Their complex percussive rhythms are some of the best ever recorded. In this song, Music For Gong Gong you will hear one of the finest percussion breaks. Some years later, disco would emerge with similar breaks, but none could surpass Osibisa.

Osibisa whose members came from Ghana and the Caribbean, formed in London and fused African music, with that of rock and funk. Their first two albums got to No. 11 in the UK album charts.  I think it is sad that today, our charts are so limited in genre terms. I can’t imagine an Afro rock band doing so well now. Music is music and should not be limited to certain genres, but the powers at be control the charts, so if we want to find alternative music, we must hunt for it!

I have all the Osibisa albums and each one contains more than one gem. So, if you like African music, then explore Osibisa where the music will explode you into happiness!
